Job Description

Zopa is hiring Data Scientists at mid and senior level for a team in London that helps the bank make better credit decisions. Colleagues in Credit Strategy, Product and Engineering work with the team to turn open-ended business questions into models, analysis and workable answers. The post is full time and hybrid, with two to three days a week in the office.

The team is building a product-focused data science function centred on credit. Work covers rebuilding and extending the models behind consumer-credit decisions, and sharpening how risk, customer value and outcomes are modelled. Named priorities include core risk models and value models covering revenue, profit forecasts and customer lifetime value.

This is an individual contributor role in a small, cooperative group, with real ownership and room to shape the work. Zopa will assess candidates at whichever level best fits their background, depth of technical skill and reach of impact.

Day to day, the work means taking a loosely defined credit question through to a practical model or analysis, supporting the move into production alongside Product and Engineering, and explaining technical choices so colleagues across the business can act on them. The ideal person writes solid Python, uses Git, understands standard methods for prediction problems, and has a firm grip on hypothesis testing and experimental design.

Responsibilities

  • Turn vague credit questions raised in discussions into practical modelling and analysis
  • Build, refine and maintain the models behind consumer-credit decisions
  • Contribute to the core risk models and to wider value models, such as revenue, profit forecasting and lifetime value
  • Use Python and careful statistical reasoning to build classification and regression solutions
  • Team up with Credit Strategy colleagues to grasp priorities and shape useful answers
  • Coordinate with Product and Engineering on sequencing and on moving models into production
  • Clarify technical decisions, reconcile differing views and keep decisions moving

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience applying data science
  • Practical Python and Git skills
  • Knowledge of standard statistical-learning methods and machine-learning techniques suited to classification or regression
  • Solid statistical grounding, including hypothesis tests and experimental design
  • Capacity to take an unclear problem through to a usable model or analysis, with little guidance
  • Clear, confident communication with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to build agreement when views diverge and to collaborate across the business, Product and Engineering
  • Curiosity and practicality, working well with limited supervision

Qualifications

  • Prior work in consumer credit, loans, card products or an adjacent credit-risk area
  • Exposure to deep learning models built for sequences, or to transformer architectures
  • Work building Python microservices that run in production

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Working overseas for as many as 120 days a year, if the right to work applies in that country
