Job Description

Strategic Analytics is the group that gives Motive's Product organization a data-driven view of the business. Its analysts translate operating figures and product usage records into guidance on growth, churn, and profitability. The opening here sits in the profitability workstream, currently a closely watched area of the group.

The analyst takes over cost of goods sold and gross margin work for both hardware and software at Motive, covering vehicle gateways, dashcams, and an expanding set of software offerings. Typical tasks include estimating savings from cost changes, building what-if scenarios, and walking finance leaders, the Chief Product Officer, and the Chief Technology Officer through recommended profit levers.

Most assignments begin with loosely framed questions from senior executives. The analyst defines the problem, assembles the evidence, and arrives at a defensible position. The work is problem solving rather than report production. The role starts as an individual contributor position with end-to-end accountability, and a move into managing people may follow later.

A good fit is someone who enjoys ill-defined questions, works well with little supervision, and can establish definitions and confirm data quality where the data is messy. Candidates whose main interest is dashboard building or people management will find the role a poor match. The position is fully remote, and the United States pay range listed is $129,000 to $177,000 USD.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cost of goods sold and gross margin work across hardware and software, including vehicle gateways and dashcams
  • Estimate savings from cost changes and build scenario models around profitability levers
  • Present profit-focused recommendations to the CPO, the CTO, and finance leadership
  • Frame high-stakes, loosely defined questions from senior stakeholders and deliver a clear position
  • Work alongside data engineering, finance, and product staff on cost drivers and on roadmap or investment choices
  • Create reliable datasets and reusable analysis frameworks out of disorganized data
  • Help raise documentation, version control, and analytical standards across the team

Requirements

  • Seven or more years in analytics, strategic finance, or an adjacent field, with solid financial and operational modeling
  • Expert SQL skills, with complex queries written independently
  • Working command of unit economics such as gross margin, contribution margin, cost structure, and scenario modeling
  • A habit of breaking ambiguous business problems into parts before answering them
  • Experience presenting findings and a clear position to vice presidents and C-suite leaders
  • Comfort working autonomously when context is partial and priorities change
  • Experience setting definitions, checking data quality, and building datasets from nothing

Qualifications

  • Background in hardware and software combination products, and an understanding of why their cost structure differs from pure SaaS
  • Python for analysis and automation
  • Hands-on use of an analytics stack such as dbt or Airflow
  • Experience in corporate finance planning, FP&A-style modeling, or consulting with a technical edge

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and equity
  • Health, pharmacy, optical, and dental coverage
  • Paid time off and sick time
  • Disability insurance covering short and long durations
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) contribution
  • Eligibility rules apply to these benefits
