Smartsheet is seeking a DevOps Engineer II for its Edge and Developer Experience team, with this position eligible to be performed remotely from Bulgaria. For over twenty years, Smartsheet has built solutions enabling teams to handle work seamlessly and scale operations, and the company is presently combining human teams with artificial intelligence agents. In this role, the engineer will work within the Edge and Developer Experience group, which handles the company high-performance edge proxy platform and expands internal engineering tooling adoption. The edge proxy processes incoming traffic for commercial and FedRAMP-authorized United States Government environments, while the team manages the entire platform lifecycle from proxy configuration and multi-region AWS EKS infrastructure provisioning to observability assistance. Additionally, the group drives internal developer tooling integrations such as developer portals and standardized CI/CD pipelines to boost engineering velocity and experience across the organization. The selected candidate will report to an engineering leader located in Bulgaria.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the upkeep, upgrades, and expansion of the high-performance reverse proxy platform by writing Go and Python automation, managing container images on hardened Linux bases, and utilizing CDN and traffic management capabilities
- Build and maintain cloud infrastructure as code via Terraform and Terragrunt modules and live configurations for EKS clusters, load balancers, IAM roles, and supporting AWS services
- Operate Kubernetes clusters by helping manage multi-region EKS deployments through GitOps workflows and Helm charts
- Support CI/CD pipelines by designing, maintaining, and enhancing shared GitLab CI/CD pipeline templates with integrated DevSecOps guardrails
- Automate operational tasks such as container image patching, EKS AMI rotation, and automated patching cycles
- Manage observability by provisioning and maintaining Datadog SLOs, monitors, and dashboards, and participate in the team on-call rotation for incident response
- Support developer experience initiatives by assisting with platform rollouts and integrations designed to reduce engineering cognitive load
- Apply AI tools and workflows within the domain to enhance project execution, infrastructure design, and debugging
Requirements
- Possess two to four years of professional experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering
- Demonstrate hands-on experience utilizing Terraform for cloud infrastructure management
- Bring practical experience with Kubernetes operations and AWS services including EKS, VPC, IAM, and ECR
- Show proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, with Go or Python preferred, for operational automation
- Have experience designing or maintaining CI/CD pipelines, with GitLab CI/CD preferred
- Be familiar with container image security practices and GitOps workflows
- Maintain a strong operational mindset with a willingness to join on-call rotations and handle incident responses
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with required fluency in English
- Show familiarity with leveraging AI-based workflows to write or maintain code and infrastructure
- Be legally eligible to work in Bulgaria on an ongoing basis
Qualifications
- Hold a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or possess equivalent industry experience
- Understand reverse proxies, API gateways, or load balancers such as NGINX or HAProxy
- Possess familiarity with FedRAMP or AWS GovCloud operational constraints
- Have experience managing Datadog resources using infrastructure as code
- Demonstrate experience integrating internal developer portals or feature flag management tools
