Job Description

GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations boost developer productivity, enhance operational efficiency, and lower security and compliance risks. The company is currently hiring a Director, Analytics Engineering to head up a group of eight professionals while reporting directly to the Vice President of Data & Insights. This position involves establishing strategy across the data division, keeping closely connected to technical execution, and collaborating alongside Data Engineering, Data Science, IT, and other business executives.

The person in this role will focus on three core areas: developing dependable and AI-ready self-service systems, establishing enterprise-wide data access strategies encompassing BI tools and AI mechanisms like Claude and MCP servers, and constructing production-grade data applications utilized company-wide. Ideal candidates possess substantial leadership experience, advanced data modeling and semantic layer capabilities, and practical proficiency in implementing LLM-powered data access architectures. Team members incorporate artificial intelligence into everyday workflows as a core productivity multiplier.

GitLab functions as an all-remote organization, allowing professionals to work asynchronously while adopting company competencies and values. Base pay for United States residents spans from $139,200 to $285,600 per year, determined through interviews, background evaluation, market alignment, and geographic positioning. Full-time personnel receive equity compensation, flexible paid time off, parental leave, team member resource groups, and growth support resources.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a trusted semantic model featuring governed metrics and consistent business definitions across all analytics tools
  • Design evaluation frameworks and ground-truth datasets to measure answer quality, spot regressions, and guide ongoing enhancements
  • Instrument telemetry to monitor semantic model and AI tool usage, user queries, and common bottlenecks
  • Establish model-selection harnesses enabling the organization to distribute workloads across various large language models
  • Manage data modeling, curated self-service datasets, data contracts, testing procedures, and documentation
  • Define AI data access strategies governing BI tools, Claude instances, MCP servers, and Slack agents
  • Oversee enterprise business intelligence and self-service platform evaluations, adoption rates, and associated expenditures
  • Create self-service assets such as Claude skills, documentation, and guided user workflows
  • Deliver enterprise-grade data applications combining Snowflake data sources, API interactions, AI deep dives, and database write-backs
  • Establish engineering protocols for security, authentication, testing, deployment, and monitoring across data applications
  • Develop long-range strategic roadmaps aligned with broader company goals and balance stakeholder demands with technical debt reduction
  • Hire, mentor, manage, and retain an eight-person team by building career paths and distributing technical ownership
  • Act as customer zero for internal tools, providing actionable feedback to Product and Engineering teams

Requirements

  • Twelve or more years of professional experience spanning analytics engineering, data engineering, or business intelligence
  • Minimum of five years of team leadership experience
  • At least two years of experience managing managers or senior leads
  • Deep expertise in data modeling and semantic layers including dbt Semantic Layer, Snowflake semantic views, LookML, or Cube
  • Expert-level proficiency in dbt including testing and CI/CD operations across multi-team projects
  • Hands-on background constructing LLM-powered data access solutions such as text-to-SQL, agents, and MCP servers
  • Experience building evaluation frameworks and telemetry for answer quality alongside advanced use of AI coding agents like Claude Code
  • Expert SQL skills paired with strong Snowflake experience and working knowledge of Python
  • Extensive data governance background encompassing data quality, lineage, certified datasets, and access controls like RBAC and row masking
  • Proven track record guiding cross-functional data initiatives from strategy formulation through adoption
  • Ability to utilize GitLab, succeed in an all-remote and asynchronous environment, and align with company values

Qualifications

  • Experience working with LLM routing or gateway tools alongside model cost management
  • Background handling BI platform migrations or utilizing Tableau and Omni
  • Familiarity with web application development using React, TypeScript, and Postgres
  • Past ownership of finance or revenue-critical data streams requiring strict accuracy and auditability

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible paid time off
