GoCardless (part of Mollie) is hiring a Director of Engineering based at its Riga office. Riga is one of the company's main engineering hubs, with more than 200 people. The Connectivity group is based there and runs each bank debit and open banking link the company sells, including core banking links and file submissions that move billions of pounds monthly. The group owns its work end to end, including on-call and incident handling.
The director has three main jobs: keep Connectivity delivering as a core group, act as engineering site leader for Riga and work with local leaders to make the office a place people want to join, and advocate for local hiring through training schools and community groups. The director owns the reliability and delivery roadmap alongside other senior leaders, sets technical investment priorities with clear expected returns, and shapes how the group runs at scale.
The ideal candidate has built and run agile groups of 20-plus staff, spanning managers and individual contributors through principal level. They have operated at large scale, where security and uptime discipline count, communicate clearly and concisely with leadership teams, and stay close enough to technical detail to dig into problems and future architecture. - Keep the Connectivity group delivering reliably, including all core banking links and file submissions
- Own the reliability and delivery roadmap with other senior leaders

- Help make Riga an attractive place for people and grow local talent
- Build relationships with training schools and local communities for hiring
- Work as a player-manager who can go deep on technical problems and future architecture

Requirements
- Track record of building and running agile groups of 20-plus people
- Experience leading managers and individual contributors up through principal grade
- Experience operating large systems, where security and uptime discipline are non-negotiable
- A delivery focus, with accurate estimates, tracked time and velocity used to improve the team
- Clear, concise communication with leadership teams, often on non-technical topics
- A strategic mindset for long-term roadmaps and hard problems
- Based in the Riga office; this is not a remote role
