Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations boost developer efficiency, streamline operations, and minimize security risks. The company seeks a remote, full-time Distinguished Engineer to lead technical strategy across its Core DevOps services, which encompass continuous integration, continuous deployment, planning, and source control features.
This position is designed for an expert technical leader who will partner directly with the Vice President of Engineering. The incumbent will shape future technical directions, eliminate systemic technical debt, integrate AI and agentic workflows into production infrastructure, and mentor senior engineering talent.
The role operates within a globally distributed team that values asynchronous communication. Successful candidates will navigate complex architectures across multi-tenant, self-managed, and dedicated deployments while upholding strict performance standards for availability and latency.
Responsibilities
- Formulate and update the long-term technical vision for continuous integration, continuous deployment, planning, and source control solutions.
- Partner with the Vice President of Engineering to guide planning, technical investments, and engineering priorities.
- Translate organization-wide AI integration, software quality, and productivity goals into actionable technical strategies for Core DevOps.
- Establish concrete performance benchmarks for service availability, latency, data correctness, and test reliability.
- Identify and remediate systemic technical risks, single points of failure, and scalability bottlenecks.
- Write code, prototypes, and proofs of concept to validate complex design decisions.
- Design safe migration paths and incremental cutovers for large, long-running production systems.
- Integrate platform capabilities from the AI organization into Core DevOps services.
- Act as the technical escalation point for complex cross-team decisions.
- Review critical architecture designs and merge requests to mentor engineering staff.
- Participate in the incident management on-call rotation to support availability targets.
- Complete interview training and evaluate technical candidates during hiring panels.
Requirements
- More than ten years of software engineering experience.
- More than four years of senior technical leadership experience at a Staff, Principal, or equivalent level.
- Extensive expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, including large language models and autonomous agentic workflows at production scale.
- Demonstrated background in designing and testing technical experiments and translating insights into scalable architectures.
- Strong proficiency in scalable, multi-tenant distributed systems covering fault tolerance, observability, and service decomposition.
- Experience implementing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI deployment practices.
- Proven ability to mentor senior engineers and guide technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
- Proficiency with written and asynchronous communication in a fully remote work environment.
