Job Description
Wise has an opening for an Engineering Lead in its Account Management group in London. The group develops Wise's current account and daily-banking products, which sit at the centre of the offer. Its scope includes the main account, Jars, the home screen, and the payment, conversion and top-up flows, along with the ledger and money-movement infrastructure that other Wise teams depend on.
This is a blend of engineering, product and people leadership, with the expectation of working across all three. The lead coaches and develops engineers, takes responsibility for their output and wellbeing, and charts the team's technical direction, including how to manage reliability and technical debt. Staying close to the code is expected: writing it, reviewing designs and pull requests, and steering features across server, web and app platforms. The lead partners closely with the product manager and design to decide what merits building.
Dependencies run to Account Sharing for joint accounts, Send for money in and out, and Wise Platform for products built on the account. The codebase uses Java, Kotlin and Spring Boot. A strong server-side background is needed, including depth in distributed architectures, event-based designs and microservices, plus the ability to make consequential architecture decisions. The lead should have a history of keeping critical systems reliable, scalable and correct.
Previous leadership of engineers is expected: giving people context and autonomy, and explaining technical trade-offs in ways that both engineers and non-engineers grasp. A product-engineer outlook that measures success by customer and business effect, plus moving quickly without sacrificing quality, is valued. Experience in fintech, payments or banking, and enthusiasm for using AI to speed up work, are nice to have. The salary is £105,000 to £135,000 GBP plus RSUs.
