Wise is looking for a Senior Database Engineer (operating at the IC3 level) to join its Database Platform team in London. In this full-time, on-site role, the selected candidate will help design, build, and scale a global cloud-based database platform that empowers hundreds of engineers across multiple environments. The position focuses heavily on developing internal database infrastructure, creating automation tooling, and establishing security controls for distributed systems. Responsibilities
- Design and build the internal cloud-based database platform end-to-end
- Establish the long-term automation strategy for system upgrades, migrations, and failure recovery
- Incorporate security and compliance controls like encryption, authentication, and role-based access control into platform components
- Monitor and maintain the availability, security, and reliability of owned systems
- Work alongside product teams, site reliability engineers, and database administrators to enforce platform guardrails
- Handle incident resolution as an escalation point and lead post-incident reviews
- Mentor fellow engineers, aid onboarding, and minimize single points of failure
- Join on-call rotations and provide senior-level escalation support
- Represent the team in cross-company engineering efforts and conduct candidate interviews
Requirements
- Significant platform engineering experience with senior ownership of large-scale production systems
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure on AWS or GCP
- Strong proficiency in Python or a comparable programming language
- Solid grasp of software engineering principles for writing secure and maintainable code
- Familiarity with Cloud APIs and DevOps tools like Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD, and Teleport
- Clear communication skills with the ability to articulate technical trade-offs
Qualifications
- Practical experience managing distributed databases at scale, preferably YugabyteDB, CockroachDB, TiDB, or Cloud Spanner
- Deep operational background with distributed SQL systems in production environments
- Experience or strong interest in migration patterns such as CDC and logical replication
- Background in building Database-as-a-Service platforms or internal developer tools
