Wise seeks a Senior Platform Engineer for its Database Platform team in London. This on-site, full-time role focuses on designing, building, and operating a global cloud-based database platform that serves hundreds of engineers and powers numerous internal databases.
The position suits engineers who prioritize automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. Professionals in this role will simplify complex infrastructure, establish platform guardrails, and build developer tools that enable product teams to move quickly while maintaining high standards of reliability and security.
Wise is a company building international money movement services through diverse, equitable, and inclusive teams. The successful candidate will guide long-term automation strategies, manage compliance controls for Yugabyte platform components, lead incident responses, and mentor fellow engineers.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and evolve the internal cloud-based database platform
- Define long-term automation strategies covering migrations, upgrades, and failure recovery
- Integrate security and compliance controls such as encryption, authentication, RBAC, and network controls into platform components
- Collaborate with product teams, site reliability engineers, and database administrators to apply platform guardrails
- Lead minor and major incident resolution and conduct post-incident reviews
- Mentor engineers, support onboarding, and eliminate single points of failure
- Participate in on-call rotations and provide senior escalation support
- Represent the team in cross-tribe and cross-company engineering initiatives
Requirements
- Significant platform engineering experience with senior ownership of production systems at scale
- Experience utilizing AWS or GCP cloud infrastructure
- Strong proficiency in Python or similar programming languages
- Solid understanding of software engineering principles for writing secure, testable, and maintainable code
- Familiarity with cloud APIs and DevOps tooling including Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD pipelines, and Teleport
- Demonstrated experience contributing to incident response and post-incident improvements
Qualifications
- Practical experience with distributed databases at scale, with YugabyteDB preferred over CockroachDB, TiDB, or Cloud Spanner
- Deep operational expertise running distributed SQL systems in production
- Experience or interest in implementing migration patterns such as CDC, logical replication, verification, and rollback
- Experience building Database-as-a-Service platforms or internal developer tooling
