Job Description
Deputy is offering a 12-month fixed term contract for a Software Engineer in a hybrid setup. The engineer contributes to Deputy's product line, which the company says serves customers from small and medium businesses through to large enterprises, across millions of users.
Working with peers, product designers and leadership, the engineer turns unclear, customer-facing challenges into finished software. Responsibilities span planning, design, build and release of browser-based interfaces and server-side services. The engineer is expected to stand behind the quality of their code, including automated testing, and to track down and resolve defects inside a defined area. The role also involves design reviews, code reviews, pair programming and technical debate, and mentoring less experienced developers through the development lifecycle.
The posting asks for at least three years of related experience and a firm grounding in computer science principles, including algorithms and data structures. It describes an engineer who keeps customers in view, moves decisively, and has shipped scalable, resilient systems. The company does not require a particular language. Front-end skills with JavaScript and a framework such as React or Vue are listed, along with back-end skills in PHP or Go. Designing APIs over REST or RPC, with familiarity with protobuf, gRPC or OpenAPI, is expected. Experience building microservices and using containers and serverless tools such as Docker, ECS, Lambda, SQS and Kinesis fits the profile. Storage experience with MySQL, Redis, DynamoDB or S3 is also part of the expected skill set, together with reusable responsive front-end components. Observability and fault-tolerance practice, including caching, queueing, load balancing and circuit breakers, rounds it out.
Deputy describes itself as focused on improving work for hourly staff and says it is becoming an AI-native business, with staff expected to use AI tools in their daily work.
