Wise seeks an Engineering Lead to join its Comparison team within the Onboarding & Scalable Growth squad in London. In this on-site, full-time role, the professional will guide a growing group of full-stack and backend engineers, owning their productivity, professional growth, and team health. The position centers on building and maintaining transparent pricing data platforms that help users understand international money transfer costs.
The person in this role will oversee competitor pricing collection systems, public Comparison APIs, and data pipelines. Responsibilities involve scaling intelligent, self-healing data scrapers, incorporating artificial intelligence and large language models safely into the pipeline, and partnering with product managers, marketing, compliance, and pricing teams to drive reach, conversion, and retention goals. Candidates should feel comfortable working across the full technology stack, from backend microservices to React and Next.js interfaces, while maintaining code quality and hands-on system reliability.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and coach engineering staff while scaling team operations
- Partner with product management to define the technical vision and roadmap across reach, conversion, and retention growth levers
- Manage the reliability, scalability, and accuracy of competitor data platforms and the public Comparison API
- Architect and scale intelligent, resilient, and self-healing data scraping technologies
- Integrate artificial intelligence tools such as large language models into data pipelines for extraction and quality control
- Collaborate across departments including marketing, compliance, SEO, regional, and pricing teams to establish governance and operating models
- Write code and participate in the on-call rotation for critical services
- Evaluate technical designs and guide data-driven choices using experiments and metrics
Requirements
- Demonstrated background in leading, mentoring, and coaching high-performing teams
- Proven experience designing and operating scalable systems handling large volumes of data and traffic with a focus on observability and data quality
- Experience breaking down complex projects into incremental milestones
- Working knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, event-driven microservices architectures like Kafka, and relational databases
- Practical experience designing systems that collect and validate data from changing or unreliable external sources
Qualifications
- Experience or strong interest in applying large language models in production environments
- Background in running A/B testing experiments and collaborating closely with analysts
