Job Description
Wise is looking for an Engineering Lead to join the Recommend team in London on a full-time, on-site basis. This backend-focused, hands-on role centers on growing the customer base through word-of-mouth channels and referral programs. The team handles the complete user journey, from referral platforms and reward mechanisms to onboarding referred customers until their initial international money needs are fulfilled. Collaboration happens daily among backend, frontend, and mobile software engineers, designers, and data analysts.
The person in this position will shape the product vision and technical strategy across three main areas: reaching customers at the right moment, simplifying advocacy, and ensuring recognition and rewards. Responsibilities include mentoring engineers, maintaining codebases, architecting scalable platforms, partnering with product management, and collaborating across marketing and regional teams. Participation in the on-call rotation for critical services is also required.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and mentor a team of software engineers to support their professional growth
- Partner with the Product Manager to shape the roadmap and technical vision
- Own the technical strategy and delivery for the referral and word-of-mouth platform
- Maintain a hands-on approach by writing code, building distributed systems, and joining the on-call rotation
- Architect scalable and resilient technology to support flexible campaigns
- Manage hiring, team health, productivity, and performance
- Collaborate with marketing, regional, and product teams to launch new incentives across various markets
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring software engineers
- Background in object-oriented programming languages such as Java or similar modern tech stacks
- Experience building and working with distributed, high-scalability, microservice, event-driven, and asynchronous architectures
- Experience decoupling systems without interrupting business continuity
- Experience building customer-facing products with a strong product and customer mindset
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional peers including data science, design, and analytics
