Wise is seeking a Senior Engineering Lead to oversee the Identities and Attributes team within the Identity Risk Platform squad. In this critical leadership position, the chosen candidate will shape architectural strategy and scale the core identity layer that powers risk, onboarding, and servicing decisions globally. This role combines technical ownership of high-throughput and low-latency services with team mentorship, recruitment, and cross-functional alignment.
The person in the role will guide the evolution of core identity domains, design API contracts and data schemas, enforce data governance standards like lineage and quality, and maintain platform resilience. Candidates are expected to bring practical technical proficiency in Java, microservices, distributed systems, and schema design, alongside experience leading software engineers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the architectural design and operational excellence of core Identity and Attribute domains and APIs
- Serve as the primary technical bridge between Product squads, Risk and FinCrime teams, and Verification providers
- Hire, mentor, and lead a multi-level engineering team while defining engineering standards and processes
- Own schemas and data contracts for individuals, businesses, roles, and attributes to guarantee data integrity and auditability
- Establish technical standards for data lineage, quality, and regulatory compliance within the Identity Risk Platform
- Drive recruitment strategy and manage the performance and culture of the engineering team
- Partner with product managers and other engineering leaders to align technical choices with security and business goals
- Monitor and maintain high availability, low latency, and operational SLAs and SLOs for real-time risk services
Requirements
- Hands-on technical experience with object-oriented programming languages, specifically Java
- Familiarity with modern technology stacks including REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and CI/CD pipelines
- Proven background in leading and mentoring software engineers
- Experience building customer-facing products with a strong product and customer mindset
- Expertise in schema design, indexing strategies, and query optimization for ACID-compliant transactional data
- Experience using partitioning and read-replicas for scaling systems
- Experience handling unstructured data at scale through sharding and aggregation pipeline optimization
- Experience leveraging Redis or Valkey for high-performance distributed caching
- Ability to complete technical interviews to showcase knowledge
