GitLab is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and expand a high-performing engineering group within the Data Foundations organization. The company builds an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps used by millions of developers and organizations worldwide to ship secure software efficiently. In this position, the selected leader will oversee the Data Insights Platform team and classic search initiatives, balancing people management responsibilities with hands-on architectural contributions for high-throughput, distributed data systems.
This role is well-suited for a technical manager with deep distributed systems knowledge who enjoys guiding backend architecture, event pipelines, and storage technologies while mentoring engineers. The team builds core infrastructure handling hundreds of millions of events daily, powering analytics, dashboards, and search capabilities across multiple deployment models including SaaS, Dedicated, self-managed, and Cells environments. Daily work involves close cross-functional collaboration with product, design, and infrastructure groups to scale reliable data systems and integrate artificial intelligence to drive productivity.
Candidates will partner closely with product managers and peer managers to define roadmaps, drive execution, and maintain rigorous operational standards for availability, throughput, and performance. Responsibilities
- Hire, manage, and enable a high-performing Data Insights Platform engineering team
- Partner with product managers, designers, and peer engineering managers to define and deliver the product roadmap
- Own planning, prioritization, execution, and operational follow-through for architecture and platform enhancements
- Guide technical designs for distributed data-path components including ingestion, buffering, enrichment, exporting, and querying
- Help the team design safe and scalable integrations with the GitLab monolith using gRPC and Protobuf query paths
- Promote strict security, privacy, and governance practices regarding authentication, authorization, and data classifications
- Enhance operational maturity through better observability, metrics, logging, capacity planning, and incident recovery runbooks
- Collaborate across functions to deliver customer-facing reporting capabilities built on a scalable data foundation
Requirements
- Experience managing platform, infrastructure, or data systems teams at scale
- Deep distributed systems expertise regarding service boundaries, asynchronous pipelines, backpressure, fault tolerance, and horizontal scalability
- Strong technical background in backend and platform engineering to guide high-throughput event pipelines
- Familiarity with change data capture, event streaming, messaging systems, OLAP data stores, and query-serving layers
- Ability to combine people management and coaching with technical architecture guidance
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills working with platform and feature teams
- Experience building or operating systems across multiple deployment models
- Strong written communication skills for an all-remote, asynchronous work environment
