This is not a conventional infrastructure management position. Instead, the individual selected will oversee the open-source Git software itself, Gitaly, and the associated remote procedure call layer that keeps enterprise-scale Git running smoothly across SaaS, Self-Managed, and GitLab Dedicated deployment frameworks. Because Git and Gitaly form the foundation of GitLab, production disruptions instantly impact downstream capabilities including code reviews, continuous integration, and releases.

The role suits engineering leaders who possess direct technical understanding of Git technologies, distributed systems concepts, and production reliability practices across multiple deployment strategies. Team members at GitLab incorporate artificial intelligence into their routine workflows as a core productivity driver. Responsibilities

Hire, mentor, and lead a specialized engineering team focused on platform expertise for Git and Gitaly infrastructure.
Manage production reliability for Git and Gitaly across SaaS, Self-Managed, and GitLab Dedicated environments.
Oversee incident management, root cause analyses, and postmortems to distinguish Git internals issues from general infrastructure failures.
Design and maintain service models ensuring clarity on shared versus deployment-specific components.
Keep architectural and tooling choices cloud-agnostic rather than relying on a single hyperscaler.
Coordinate with teams managing each deployment model to maintain unified operational playbooks.
Apply principles of distributed systems, such as replication, consistency, and failure domains, to storage and replication architecture.
Direct elastic storage and compute strategies including autoscaling, capacity planning, and consumption-based provisioning for high-volume customers.

Requirements

Familiarity with GitLab products, repository operations, and deployment variations across self-managed, dedicated, and SaaS environments.
Hands-on expertise with Git internals, including object models, protocols, and performance behaviors under heavy load.
Solid grounding in distributed systems concepts like replication, horizontal scalability, consistency, and failure handling.
Background running production infrastructure across multi-tenant SaaS, single-tenant, or self-managed setups.
Familiarity with variable load management, elastic compute and storage, and consumption-based system design.
People leadership background managing platform operations or site reliability engineering teams.

Qualifications

Practical experience working with the internals of Gitaly, libgit2, JGit, or alternative Git implementations.
Background maintaining cloud-agnostic infrastructure deployed across multiple hyperscalers or on-premises systems.
