Job Description
This full-time Engineering Manager role heads the Identity Platform team at Ebury in London. The group builds authentication and authorisation controls that must handle high volumes and cannot fail, and it designs services that decide permissions for people, backend services and bots alike.
The arrangement is hybrid, with four days in the office and one day at home. The posting calls the position player-coach: the manager stays hands-on with code early on through pairing, reviews and releases, and moves gradually toward growing people and systems as the group expands.
The ideal candidate has led and developed software engineers, has real experience running distributed systems on AWS, and brings a background in fintech or another regulated, payments-oriented field. The employer values platform-first design, removing old technical debt and feature flags, and adopting AI tools responsibly while the person still owns the shipped code.
Ebury, a fintech, pairs business accounts with hedging and financing tools in one system, aiming to help companies run and expand internationally.
Responsibilities
- Mentor engineers with specific feedback, defined progression routes and regular performance reviews
- Convert vague business goals into concrete roadmaps, order the work and manage delivery risk
- Lead design and architecture reviews for high-volume, event-driven transaction systems running on AWS and BigQuery
- Work with product, design and business teams to shape customer solutions and the trade-offs behind them
- Keep production stable, keep on-call sustainable, and maintain testing, CI/CD and monitoring standards
- Bring AI tools into development workflows responsibly, while the engineer keeps ownership of shipped code
Requirements
- Track record of leading and growing software engineering teams, with mentoring and strong delivery standards
- Strong computer science grounding and practical experience running large distributed platforms on AWS
- Able to set interview standards and run demanding hiring processes
- Practical use of AI coding assistants, with clear views on how teams should adopt them
- Customer value comes first, scope is kept practical, and money-movement systems get rigorous handling, including idempotency and reconciliation
- Background building platforms that define and run authentication and fine-grained authorisation
- Experience in fintech, financial services, or multi-channel and multi-product settings
- Working knowledge of agile methods and sound development practice
- Clear, persuasive communication and leadership, and fluent English
Qualifications
- Fintech, payments or other regulated-sector background
- Previous time on early-stage founding hub teams
- Exposure to web and mobile channels
- Work on enterprise identity platforms, including IAM tooling, FGAC and authorisation policy design
- Familiarity with device binding and attestation, and with merging fragmented identities into one model
- Working knowledge of AWS, GCP or Azure, and of Docker and Kubernetes
- Open-source contributions or a portfolio that shows technical curiosity
- Domain-driven design (DDD) practice and consistent messaging patterns in a centralised architecture
