Spotify is seeking a Machine Learning Engineering Manager to lead the Oasis Squad in New York on a remote basis. In this role, you will oversee a cross-functional group of backend, data, and machine learning professionals who design the systems driving music delivery and discovery. This position is ideal for a technical leader who enjoys maintaining proximity to engineering tasks while mentoring experienced practitioners, fostering team autonomy, and managing shifting business needs. You will evaluate complex modeling strategies, guide technical choices, and act as a liaison between your squad and partners across the music business, product, and personalization domains. Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering team focused on machine learning, data, and backend systems
- Provide technical guidance on complex modeling strategies, system design, and risk assessments
- Communicate and advocate for team objectives with stakeholders across product, business, insights, and personalization
- Oversee operational health, delivery schedules, capacity planning, and prioritization with minimal overhead process
- Participate hands-on in technical problem-solving and engineering work as a player-coach
- Integrate AI tools into engineering workflows to enhance productivity and system capabilities
- Hire and onboard engineering staff to support team evolution and knowledge distribution
Requirements
- Prior experience managing engineers and developing technical individual contributors
- Strong background in machine learning with the ability to engage in system design and modeling strategy discussions
- Comfort operating in environments with evolving product priorities and shifting directions
- Ability to balance team autonomy with active coaching, risk identification, and direct decision-making when necessary
- Experience managing technical and business dependencies with cross-functional partner teams
- Familiarity with AI tools and viewpoints on improving engineering effectiveness
