Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, serving over fifty million registered users globally. The company focuses on helping organizations enhance developer efficiency, streamline operational processes, minimize security risks, and accelerate digital transformation.
As an Engineering Manager for Nonlinear Productivity, the selected professional will report directly to a Senior Manager or Director. This position sits at the intersection of product, engineering, artificial intelligence assisted development, and developer productivity. The primary objective is to sever the connection between headcount growth and engineering output by analyzing software development lifecycles, identifying workflow friction, testing prototypes, and determining which internal fixes should transition into commercial products for customers.
The role suits candidates who enjoy working without an established backlog, navigating high ambiguity, and directly assessing agentic tooling or code-generation workflows. Team members incorporate artificial intelligence into daily operations as a core productivity multiplier.
Responsibilities
- Examine internal software development lifecycles and code-generation workflows to spot structural bottlenecks.
- Formulate a data-driven strategy to determine where technical interventions create the greatest leverage.
- Assess build, adapt, and acquisition options for emerging artificial intelligence and agentic tooling.
- Construct prototypes and perform direct architectural reviews to validate fixes before broad investment.
- Supervise a compact team or function as a hands-on working manager prioritizing talent density.
- Collaborate with impacted teams to transition validated prototypes into internal adoption and long-term maintenance.
- Partner with product teams to construct business and technical cases for productizing successful internal tools.
- Record reusable insights to prevent successful fixes from remaining isolated tribal knowledge.
- Track and report key metric improvements and progress regarding internal tool productization.
Requirements
- Familiarity with utilizing GitLab.
- Demonstrated history of locating and launching technical solutions for developer productivity, platform friction, or continuous integration and continuous delivery problems.
- Capability to navigate ambiguous environments without a pre-existing backlog.
- Prior people management background in a working manager or small-team capacity.
- Technical aptitude required to directly evaluate and build solution prototypes.
- Product acumen to judge whether an internal utility is robust enough for paying customers.
- Acquaintance with artificial intelligence assisted or agentic development technologies.
Qualifications
- Prior background transitioning an internal utility into a customer-facing external product.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Flexible Paid Time Off
- Team Member Resource Groups
- Equity Compensation and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
- Growth and Development Fund
