FairMoney seeks an Engineering Manager (RCL) to direct and grow a technical team focused on creating and scaling dependable credit and lending systems. Established in 2017, the mobile banking institution specializes in delivering credit to emerging markets, operating primarily in Nigeria with backing from global investors such as Tiger Global, DST, and Flourish Ventures. The multicultural company employs professionals from over 27 nationalities to build comprehensive financial products including savings accounts, debit cards, current accounts, and POS solutions.
This position suits an experienced engineering leader with a strong technical background who can balance hands-on coding with people management. In this capacity, you will guide technical direction, oversee engineering execution, and ensure the reliability of owned systems. You will collaborate closely with product, data, and risk departments to translate business goals into scalable technical solutions while mentoring software engineers, establishing quality standards, and managing performance.
The successful candidate will lead software development initiatives from design to production, address technical debt, and participate in hiring to expand the engineering organization. The role requires active participation in architectural discussions, code reviews, and incident management to maintain high operational performance across distributed systems and backend services.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software engineers to foster a collaborative culture
- Own the technical direction and delivery of systems supporting lending and credit products
- Collaborate with Product, Risk, and Data teams to define technical solutions and delivery priorities
- Drive the design, development, and scaling of reliable backend services and distributed systems
- Set engineering standards for code quality, testing, deployment, observability, and reliability
- Support engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and complex problem-solving
- Identify and resolve technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and system reliability problems
- Establish and track engineering metrics regarding delivery, quality, and operational performance
- Manage incidents, root-cause analyses, and follow-up procedures
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide feedback, and handle performance management
- Participate in hiring activities to build the engineering team
Requirements
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with substantial backend development background using Golang
- 2+ years of experience managing or leading engineering teams
- Familiarity with AI native development
- Hands-on coding experience to design and code new systems while leading by example
- Experience in designing and building distributed systems and scalable backend applications
- Background working in lending, credit, fintech, payments, or related financial domains
- Understanding of relational database design, optimization, indexing, and query performance
- Knowledge of system design, software architecture, APIs, microservices, and asynchronous event-driven systems
- Experience delivering complex technical projects from design through production
- Understanding of CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and production operations
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
Qualifications
- Experience building or scaling credit decisioning, loan management, repayment, collections, or risk systems
- Experience working with high-volume transactional systems
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and modern DevOps practices
- Experience leading distributed or geographically dispersed engineering teams
- Experience hiring and scaling engineering teams in a fast-growing organization
- Familiarity with React or some level of frontend development
