Onebrief is hiring a remote Forward Deployed Engineer to connect core software capabilities with real-world mission outcomes. The company develops AI-driven workflow and collaboration software designed for military planning and operational coordination.
In this position, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, product development, and customer missions. You will deploy directly alongside military operators and command staffs via agile field sprints, operating within both unclassified and restricted environments. The role involves writing production-grade code, inspecting APIs, executing schema transformations, and debugging distributed systems to turn recurring field workarounds into core product capabilities.
This role suits professionals with a strong background in software engineering who can communicate effectively with both technical engineers and senior military leaders. Candidates must hold an active Secret clearance and be willing to travel between 25% and 50% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Engage in field embeddings with operational users to translate mission challenges into technical software solutions
- Inspect schemas, write integration scripts, invoke REST APIs, analyze logs, and debug systems inside restricted customer settings
- Collaborate with Product and Core Engineering teams to convert localized field workarounds into generalized platform capabilities
- Connect Onebrief Core and Atom Engine with partner C2 systems, databases, and military data structures in complex networks
- Perform failure-domain isolation in the field to protect core development teams
- Prepare escalations containing reproduction steps, environmental states, logs, and root hypotheses
- Communicate distributed software architecture to engineers while briefing senior military leaders on operational impact
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive software engineering, solutions engineering, or field software engineering experience featuring hands-on development
- Proficiency in standard programming languages such as Python, C++, C#, TypeScript, or Go
- Experience with REST and gRPC APIs, relational databases, data modeling, JSON and XML schemas, microservices, and cloud or edge infrastructure
- Ability to parse application logs, diagnose network or authentication failures across systems, and isolate root causes
- Skill in explaining technical trade-offs, leading interactive user sessions, and managing operational urgency with non-technical stakeholders
- Active Secret clearance
- Willingness to travel 25% to 50% of the time
Qualifications
- Prior experience as a Forward Deployed Engineer or Field Software Engineer at enterprise software or defense technology companies
- Direct experience building, deploying, or debugging software inside air-gapped Department of Defense networks or classified environments
- Familiarity with Department of Defense software delivery, C2 systems, combatant command structures, operational planning workflows, or military data systems
- Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
- Hands-on experience using modern AI-assisted development tools to speed up integrations, scripting, and data transformations
