Job Description
Cloudflare seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer, Professional Services (Application Security) to join its team in Sydney. Operating as part of a staff-augmentation model, this position embeds technical experts directly within client environments to manage, scale, and refine Cloudflare solutions. The organization runs a major global network powering millions of internet properties, focusing on web traffic routing, performance optimization, and attack mitigation.
This individual acts as a subject-matter expert and trusted advisor, handling complex architectural decisions for mission-critical infrastructure. Responsibilities include building prototypes, writing automation scripts, deploying configurations, leading workshops, and acting as the customer voice internally. The role requires extensive experience in client-facing technical domains, strong networking foundations, and the ability to operate with autonomy.
Responsibilities
- Operate as an embedded member of the client technical team following change management processes
- Design, configure, and optimize Cloudflare solutions directly inside customer environments
- Build prototypes, write automation scripts, and perform real-time troubleshooting
- Provide proactive architectural guidance, best-practice recommendations, and roadmap alignment
- Produce high-level designs, low-level designs, test plans, deployment strategies, and migration documentation
- Lead technical workshops, knowledge-transfer sessions, and special event preparations
- Document runbooks and configuration decisions in customer collaborative workspaces
- Advocate for the customer by relaying product gaps and feature requests to internal engineering and product groups
- Collaborate with account executives, solutions engineers, and customer success managers on account strategy
Requirements
- 15+ years of experience in a customer-facing technical role
- Recognized expertise in applications, including advanced tuning of WAF, Bot Management, API Gateway, DDoS protection, Rate Limiting, and performance optimization
- Expert-level understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP, TLS, DNS, and HTTP
- Demonstrated capability to implement, configure, and troubleshoot complex technical solutions
- Ability to manage competing priorities, adhere to deadlines, and handle ambiguity
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills suitable for technical and executive audiences
- Experience working with enterprise customers in the APJC region
Qualifications
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform
- Scripting skills in languages like Python, JavaScript, or Bash
- Background working in heavily regulated sectors including the public sector, financial services, or healthcare
- Experience handling complex legacy migration environments
- Industry certifications such as CISSP, CCIE, AWS, GCP, or Azure certifications
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and enterprise change-management frameworks
- Knowledge of Zero Trust and SASE principles including Access, Gateway, CASB, RBI, and DLP
- Prior familiarity with the Cloudflare product suite and edge-network ecosystem
