Job Description

Gusto provides essential business infrastructure, including payroll, health benefits, retirement plans, and human resources administration, supporting over 500,000 small businesses throughout the United States. Operating with teams situated in New York, San Francisco, and Denver, the organization aims to empower business owners to concentrate on their operations and customers.

The Enterprise AIT group at Gusto focuses on the intelligent transformation of internal corporate systems by blending artificial intelligence, analytics, and automation. Within this department, the finance function is currently redesigning its forecasting, planning, and analytical capabilities to center entirely around artificial intelligence.

As the FP&A AI Architect, the individual will formulate and direct the technical architecture and processes necessary to transition financial planning from manual spreadsheets into an automated, insight-generating operation. This position bridges financial expertise—such as driver-based planning, variance tracking, and board reporting—with data engineering and artificial intelligence system design. Responsibilities include defining multi-year strategies, constructing machine learning forecasting systems, automating commentary and scenario modeling, governing data models, and establishing rigorous trust controls.

The cash compensation for this role ranges from USD 185,000 to USD 205,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Design and establish the multi-year architecture and roadmap for AI-driven planning, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Architect driver-based, machine learning-assisted forecasting systems for revenue, headcount, operating expenses, and cash.
  • Develop agentic workflows for variance commentary, scenario modeling, flux analysis, board narratives, and ad-hoc queries.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering to establish governed data models connecting the general ledger, CRM, billing, planning tools, and HRIS.
  • Implement evaluation frameworks, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, data lineage, and audit trails to satisfy security and regulatory requirements.
  • Drive build-versus-buy decisions concerning orchestration frameworks, language model providers, and planning platforms.
  • Mentor engineers and analysts, develop reusable patterns, and encourage artificial intelligence adoption across the finance department.
  • Track and report on cycle-time improvements, forecast accuracy, analyst capacity gained, and decision latency.

Requirements

  • Ten or more years of experience in corporate finance, financial planning and analysis, data science, finance engineering, or finance systems.
  • At least three years of experience leading or designing advanced automation, artificial intelligence, or machine learning solutions for finance.
  • Strong expertise in financial planning and analysis fundamentals, including operating plans, rolling forecasts, driver-based modeling, variance analysis, and software-as-a-service or fintech metrics.
  • Practical, hands-on background working with classical forecasting methods, large language models, and agentic systems.
  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, modern data stack tools, business intelligence platforms, and enterprise planning or ERP systems.
  • Demonstrated history of delivering production-grade solutions complying with security and data governance standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with SaaS finance, fintech, payroll, or human resources technology.
  • Background in building internal tools alongside engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks and Model Context Protocol integrations.
  • Possession of a CPA, CFA, or an advanced quantitative degree.
