Gusto is looking for a Head of Gusto Controls to join its Finance, BizOps and Strategy team. In this role, the selected leader will establish and scale a forward-looking internal controls environment that spans both business process controls and IT controls. The scope includes proprietary and third-party systems that support financial products such as payroll, health benefits, and retirement.
This position suits a hands-on controls leader who can build teams, set program strategies, and embed practical controls into system designs, financial processes, and product development. The role involves shaping an AI-forward internal controls function by applying automation to risk identification and evidence evaluation, while also creating practical oversight for risks stemming from AI-enabled financial processes and software development. The ideal candidate engages collaboratively with technical and accounting leaders, translates risks into practical business decisions, and partners closely with engineering, product, data, security, and risk teams.

Responsibilities
- Build and lead the internal controls function by uniting business process controls and IT controls under one comprehensive program.
- Manage the risk-based ICFR framework across financial processes, supporting systems, and associated data by handling scoping, design, documentation, testing, remediation, and issue evaluation.
- Strengthen the control environment for complex operations, proprietary applications, and growing product lines.
- Collaborate early with Product, Engineering, Accounting, Finance, Data, Risk, and Security teams to integrate control and auditability into new processes and systems without causing unnecessary manual effort.
- Define the strategy for an AI-forward internal controls function by utilizing automation to reshape how risks are identified, evidence is assessed, and controls are monitored and tested.
- Implement practical governance for risks arising from AI-enabled financial operations and software creation.
- Manage the relationship with external auditors to ensure alignment regarding risk, scoping, testing, evidence collection, and remediation.
- Establish governance and accountability standards, including training across the organization and reporting on program effectiveness to the Audit Committee and senior management.
Requirements
- Have at least 12 years of progressive background in a SOX compliance role, internal audit, or a Big 4 accounting firm within a complex, scaling organization.
- Bring a minimum of 5 years of people leadership experience focused on hiring, mentoring, and developing skilled controls professionals.
- Possess extensive knowledge of US GAAP, the COSO framework, and management's ICFR assessment and external auditor attestation requirements.
- Demonstrate breadth across business process controls and IT controls, backed by depth in at least one of those disciplines.
- Have professional background in a technology-driven workplace featuring proprietary applications, automated controls, high transaction volumes, complex data flows, and evolving product offerings.
Qualifications
