Job Description
Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the HRX Engineering team. Gusto builds operational software for over 500,000 small businesses nationwide, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k) plans, and human resources administration. In this position, you will independently manage full-stack features across the entire software lifecycle, from technical design and coding to testing and production monitoring.
The ideal candidate is comfortable guiding projects from conception to completion with light oversight, collaborating with design and product teams, and participating in an on-call rotation. Gusto integrates artificial intelligence throughout its operations, and team members are expected to actively engage with relevant AI tools as the technology evolves. Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain features for the HR Experience product surface
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code across the technology stack
- Engage in code reviews, sprint planning sessions, and retrospectives
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to convert project requirements into technical solutions
- Monitor and enhance the reliability, performance, and overall quality of released features
- Participate in the on-call rotation and direct incident response for managed systems
- Mentor less-tenured engineers through technical guidance and code reviews
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience including full-stack work
- Demonstrated capability to design, build, and deliver frontend, backend, and data layer features with minimal supervision
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend framework or language such as Node.js, Ruby on Rails, or Python/Django
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern frontend framework such as TypeScript or React
- Solid understanding of relational database schema design, migrations, and query performance
- Ability to own projects end-to-end including scoping, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals including algorithms, data structures, automated testing, and CI/CD
Qualifications
- Experience working in fintech, payroll, or human resources technology domains
- Experience designing GraphQL or REST APIs
- Exposure to accessibility best practices
