Gusto is currently seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join the Agent & Partner Experiences team. The company focuses on supporting the small business economy by handling complex payroll, health insurance, 401(k), and HR operations for over 500,000 organizations nationwide. This position acts as a technical leader bridging the gap between traditional developer-focused APIs and AI capabilities, enabling third-party developers and autonomous agents to manage payroll directly through integrated software.
In this capacity, you will guide the technological direction of the team by developing scalable features within a substantial Ruby on Rails architecture. The work involves creating reliable API contracts, designing interface tools for AI models, and collaborating directly with developer-customers. The employer expects all team members to actively engage with relevant AI tools as the technology advances. The position offers a base salary range of USD 213,000 to 236,000 per year, accompanied by equity in the form of RSUs and standard company benefits.
Responsibilities
- Tackle and solve challenging technical and organizational problems spanning multiple operational domains
- Architect public-facing API contracts and agent-facing tools suitable for interaction by AI models
- Collaborate directly with internal partners and developer-customers to deliver payroll products
- Write clean, tested, and high-performing code within a Ruby on Rails environment
- Mentor engineers and elevate technical standards across the organization
- Establish and maintain system reliability, observability best practices, and production troubleshooting procedures
Requirements
- Possess twelve or more years of professional software development experience
- Demonstrate expertise as a technical owner for organization-wide engineering initiatives
- Exhibit deep technical proficiency in Ruby and Rails, handling massive applications and multi-codebase environments
- Demonstrate experience designing and building scalable platforms and public-facing APIs
- Show a history of mentoring peers and guiding teams through ambiguous technical challenges and competing priorities
- Communicate effectively regarding business priorities, technical goals, and constraints with leadership
Qualifications
- Background in payroll, tax, or financial technology domains
- Experience designing model-consumed interfaces such as MCP servers, tool definitions, function definitions, or AI provider integration paths
- Familiarity with GraphQL at scale, including building query construction and data mapping layers
