SGS is currently hiring a Laboratory Manager for a full-time, on-site position located in Johannesburg. This role oversees all operations, functions, quality standards, and overall effectiveness of the laboratory facility.
The successful candidate will take charge of maintaining compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 regulations, supporting external clients, and directing laboratory staff and programs. Responsibilities also include participating in budgeting processes, overseeing internal staff training, implementing operational guidelines, and managing environmental and safety protocols.
This opportunity is well-suited for an experienced laboratory professional with a background in chemistry and extensive management experience within a gold fire assay laboratory setting.
Responsibilities
- Promote and monitor workplace health, safety, and environmental policies
- Ensure day-to-day operations follow documented quality management system policies and procedures
- Provide technical support and direction to external clients and customer services
- Contribute to the budgeting process for new service development and specific projects
- Direct laboratory staff, program activities, and in-house training initiatives
- Evaluate and report analytical results while maintaining the accredited Quality Management System
- Resolve technical issues of unusual complexity and initiate formal improvement requests when nonconformity occurs
- Halt equipment use or work activities that present safety hazards or threaten service integrity
Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of proven experience working in a Gold Fire Assay Laboratory environment
- At least 5 years of management experience leading laboratory teams and operations
- Possess instrumentation skills and a good working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025
- Demonstrate strong verbal, written, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to multitask, work independently, make decisive calls under pressure, and coordinate multiple activities simultaneously
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or an equivalent qualification
