Job Description
Monzo has opened a full-time Lead Machine Learning Scientist post in its Business Banking unit. The bank offers personal and business accounts, joint accounts, credit cards, and savings or pension products. Business Banking aims to make money management fairer and clearer for small firms, and it is building AI and machine-learning features that help those firms follow cash flow, cut manual admin and decide with more confidence.
The job blends technical leadership with building things yourself. The holder would design and ship models for coming business banking experiences, ranging from forecasting and predictive scoring to language-model features. Part of the work is weighing whether machine learning, generative AI or a simpler method suits a problem, and being upfront about what each choice costs. Collaboration is constant, with peers in product, engineering, design, research and analytics, plus the MLOps and backend engineers who keep models running live.
The successful candidate has a multi-year record of getting advanced models into production on real business problems, ideally at a fast-moving technology firm. They should own the path from a business question to measurable results in live use, and be able to explain machine learning and AI concepts to people outside the discipline.
Responsibilities
- Lead hands-on work on machine learning and generative AI models for Business Banking
- Judge when a problem calls for ML, GenAI or a simpler technique, and weigh the trade-offs
- Identify high-value opportunities with Product and Data Science and set success measures
- Build evaluation and live monitoring for batch and near-real-time systems
- Work with MLOps and backend engineers to take models from build to operation
- Establish technical standards for the ML lifecycle and coach colleagues
Requirements
- Multi-year record of leading advanced ML models on real business problems
- Track record of production-grade models that deliver measurable business impact
- Confident Python user with extensive scikit-learn experience
- Proficient with SQL and willing to pick up Go
- Self-directed, able to act without being asked and to handle ambiguity
- Able to communicate ML and AI ideas clearly to non-specialists
Qualifications
- Experience in customer-facing decisioning, forecasting, recommendation, ranking or personalisation work
- Worked on ML inside fintech, banking, accounting, payments, lending or business software products
- Work with GenAI, large language models, agent workflows, retrieval or evaluation tooling
- Production coding and microservices experience in a commercial setting
- Experience designing A/B tests or other impact measurement methods
- Exposure to regulated settings where explainability and audit trails matter
