Canonical is seeking a Legal Counsel to join its expanding in-house legal team and handle a wide variety of technology and enterprise software transactions. As the creator of Ubuntu, Canonical provides open-source software and operating systems utilized globally in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data science, and internet-of-things initiatives. This remote position is open to candidates located in the EMEA and AMER regions, with an optional workspace available in London.
In this role, the successful professional will draft and negotiate worldwide commercial agreements, support internal sales groups, and collaborate with international legal professionals. The position calls for a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical capabilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and professional written and spoken English. Canonical operates as a distributed organization and requires employees to participate in international travel two to four times annually for group events.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements with global customers and vendors
- Deliver legal guidance to internal departments including the sales organization
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups on company initiatives
- Maintain accurate records of executed contracts using the internal contract management system
- Coordinate with local legal counsel across multiple countries to implement guidance
Requirements
- Exceptional academic record from both secondary school and university
- A degree in law, JD, or equivalent
- Active license to practice law or current progress toward licensure
- Demonstrated drive and history of exceeding expectations
- Strong organizational and prioritization abilities for a fast-paced environment
- Professional written and spoken English proficiency
- Ability to travel internationally two to four times per year for company events
Qualifications
- Prior experience in commercial transactions, corporate law, or intellectual property

- Familiarity with open-source software community principles
- Knowledge of the technology industry spanning silicon, data centers, PCs, and connected devices
