Canonical is seeking a Linux Devices Software Engineer to join its SnapD team. The organization produces open-source software and operating systems, most notably Ubuntu, which powers cloud computing, data science, artificial intelligence, IoT, and enterprise infrastructure. Operating primarily as a distributed workforce with team members situated globally, the business maintains a profitable and growing presence in the technology sector.

In this position, the engineer will concentrate on mission-critical Golang code related to container security sandboxing, software delivery, device management, and telemetry. The role centers on developing next-generation Linux packaging known as snaps, which are engineered for robust performance across multiple operating system flavors. Candidates should possess a strong focus on performance and quality while enjoying collaboration on open-source initiatives.

The position is available remotely within the EMEA or Americas regions. Selected professionals operate from home while participating in international team gatherings approximately twice per year for up to two weeks at a time.

Responsibilities

  • Partner actively alongside a dispersed engineering group
  • Develop reliable code to implement fresh features
  • Diagnose operating system level complications and author fixes
  • Examine and evaluate code written by fellow developers
  • Brainstorm and cooperate to establish effective technical solutions
  • Design software capable of maintaining stability despite unexpected incidents like power outages
  • Perform job duties remotely while attending global in-person team sprints twice yearly

Requirements

  • Professional programming background utilizing Go, Python, C, or C++
  • Familiarity with core Linux system-level concepts such as namespaces, cgroups, and AppArmor
  • General understanding of Linux as a developer ecosystem
  • Dedication to rigorous software testing, peer code reviews, and maintainable programming practices
