Job Description
Natera is seeking a Machine Learning Scientist to join its artificial intelligence and computational biology division. This remote, full-time position focuses on creating and launching deep learning systems that combine digital pathology, transcriptomics, genomics, and cell-free DNA data. The professional chosen for this role will collaborate with software engineers, pathologists, bioinformaticians, and scientists to scale machine learning models that support personalized oncology diagnostics and tumor-informed minimal residual disease testing.
The organization functions as a global provider of cell-free DNA testing, concentrating on women's health, organ health, and oncology, with the goal of establishing personalized genetic testing as a standard of care. Personnel at Natera work alongside industry experts to advance genetic disease management. Eligible workers receive comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability plans, along with fertility care, free testing for employees and immediate families, parental leave, commuter benefits, and a 401(k) plan.
This role entails constructing scalable machine learning pipelines on cloud infrastructure, designing deep learning models for diverse biomedical modalities, and turning research prototypes into production-ready workflows. Ideal candidates possess a doctoral degree in a relevant quantitative discipline combined with strong Python programming capabilities and expertise in PyTorch and distributed computing environments.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test deep learning models utilizing histopathology imaging, transcriptomics, genomic sequencing, and cfDNA data.
- Construct multimodal artificial intelligence architectures combining whole-slide imaging with clinical and molecular information.
- Establish production-grade machine learning workflows and pipelines on cloud systems like AWS.
- Apply deep learning frameworks such as vision transformers, convolutional neural networks, representation learning, and sequence transformers.
- Partner with clinical and technical departments to convert research prototypes into validated solutions.
- Evaluate model outputs to produce reproducible clinical and biological insights.
- Maintain thorough pipeline documentation and explain data-backed findings to cross-functional stakeholders.
Requirements
- Doctoral degree in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, biomedical engineering, or an aligned quantitative field centering on artificial intelligence or machine learning.
- Direct background in building machine learning models for biomedical use cases, such as genomics, transcriptomics, computational pathology, molecular diagnostics, or medical imaging.
- Practical experience using PyTorch alongside robust production-level coding skills in Python.
- Applied knowledge of deep learning methods including attention mechanisms, transformers, CNNs, and representation learning.
- Familiarity with managing datasets and training workflows inside cloud or distributed computing networks like AWS.
- Demonstrated capability to take ownership of research projects and transition prototypes into deployment-ready pipelines.
- Background in adapting pre-trained foundation models for downstream biomedical tasks.
Qualifications
- Experience combining clinical, molecular, and imaging data inside unified multimodal machine learning frameworks.
- Technical familiarity with DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, ctDNA assays, and methylation.
- Practical background using digital pathology software and analyzing whole-slide images.
- Exposure to time-to-event modeling, longitudinal prediction, or survival modeling.
- History of applying weakly supervised learning, self-supervised learning, or multiple instance learning to clinical data.
- Domain expertise in clinical precision medicine, biomarker discovery, or oncology.
- Publication record in peer-reviewed computational biology or machine learning journals and conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, MICCAI, and Nature Biomedical Engineering.
Core Skills
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance plans for eligible workers and dependents.
- Free testing and fertility care benefits for employees and immediate family members.
- Pregnancy and baby bonding leave.
- 401(k) retirement benefits.
- Commuter benefits.
- Employee referral program.
