Job Description

Zoox is hiring a Staff Chassis Engineer to focus on steering and braking actuation within its Chassis Actuator group. The company is building a fully autonomous fleet and the wider services needed to run it as urban ride-hailing. The engineer owns the design and the release of the parts that power the by-wire platform, works between hardware and software, and leads delivery of key milestones on an active chassis program.

The engineer handles the full lifecycle of the robotaxi's steering and braking by-wire units, from first concept to volume production. Tasks include building mechanical, software and electromechanical designs, releasing three-dimensional CAD files and 2D drawings annotated with GD&T for in-house and supplier manufacturing, and setting requirements across mechanical, electrical, NVH, load, mass, thermal and electromagnetic compatibility areas. The role also involves devising new test approaches, analysing complicated data, verifying system integrity, and working with Tier 1 suppliers to co-develop parts while hitting cost, weight, schedule and performance goals.

Working in a cross-functional setting, the engineer collaborates with vehicle integration and other groups, supports system integration and hands-on vehicle trials, and reviews CAN signal data. The posting says engineers are expected to question conventional approaches, because the vehicle is controlled by a robot.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering or a related discipline, with more than twelve years in industry. Advanced 3D CAD experience, ideally CATIA, and skill producing 2D drawings to ASME Y14.5 standards are expected. Experience developing steer-by-wire or brake-by-wire systems at a car maker or large Tier 1 supplier is needed, along with familiarity with brushless DC motors, electromechanical actuators, safety-critical architecture and functional safety.

Responsibilities

  • Handle the full lifecycle of the robotaxi's steering and braking by-wire units, from concept to production
  • Produce and release three-dimensional CAD files and 2D drawings annotated with GD&T for fabrication and suppliers
  • Define and manage component and system requirements across several engineering domains
  • Lead component testing, characterisation and validation work
  • Manage Tier 1 supplier relationships and review engineering documentation
  • Support system integration and vehicle-level trials, including CAN signal analysis
  • Lead delivery of milestones for the active chassis system

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace disciplines, or a closely related area, plus more than 12 years in industry
  • Experience designing and launching intricate parts in advanced 3D CAD software
  • Production 2D drawings following ASME Y14.5 GD&T conventions
  • Steer-by-wire or brake-by-wire development at a car maker or major Tier 1 vendor
  • Understanding of brushless DC motors, electromechanical actuators, precision gearing, NVH, functional safety and cost and mass targets
  • Writing technical requirements and validation plans for component, hardware-in-the-loop and full-vehicle testing
  • Familiarity with automotive development methods such as APQP and phase-gate reviews

Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD is a plus
  • CAN and network skills, including Vector CANalyzer or CANoe and dSPACE
  • Experience with Polarion, Jira and Confluence
