Job Description

Zopa is recruiting a Mobile Engineering Manager in London to lead engineers who build customer-facing features for its native iOS and Android apps. The app is the company's most important customer touchpoint, so it has to be fast, dependable and pleasant to use. The team works with Product, Design and Backend Engineering to take ideas from concept to customers.

The apps are built natively, with Swift and SwiftUI on iOS and Kotlin with Compose on Android. The manager reports to the Head of Engineering for Mobile and is responsible for growing the team, holding a high bar on performance and driving quality across the whole development lifecycle. This includes owning delivery, adding structure where it is missing, keeping work tied to shared goals and questioning efforts unlikely to matter. The manager partners with other engineering managers, particularly in Backend, to bring complex initiatives through end to end and to flag dependencies early. Contributing to shared mobile standards and communicating with senior stakeholders are also expected. The post is hybrid, with two to three days a week in the London office.

Suited to a leader who has run mobile engineering teams and shipped high-quality apps, who can coach experienced engineers, set direction and stay accountable for delivery and technical quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow a team of mobile engineers, creating conditions in which people can do their best work.
  • Set a high performance bar and steer quality across every stage of development.
  • Own execution and delivery for the team.
  • Work with Product and Design to agree outcomes and decide how to deliver them on mobile.
  • Question work that will not meaningfully advance the company's goals.
  • Team up with engineering managers across the company, especially in Backend, on large initiatives.
  • Spot dependencies early, clear blockers and share responsibility for end-to-end delivery.
  • Provide technical direction by asking pointed questions and holding firm standards for quality, speed and maintainability.
  • Help shape shared mobile standards and pass learnings on to other engineering managers.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership of mobile engineering teams and delivery of high-quality mobile apps.
  • Enough credibility to support and push experienced engineers.
  • Turns ambiguity into clarity and balances priorities, dependencies and competing demands.
  • Focuses on meaningful customer and business results and pushes back on low-impact priorities.
  • Builds trusted partnerships across Product, Design and Engineering.
  • Leads through clear expectations, useful feedback, coaching and high standards.
  • Communicates with empathy and clarity across many stakeholder groups.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a regulated environment where customer interests come first.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible working, including the option to work from overseas for as many as 120 days a year, subject to the right to work in that country.
