Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations boost developer efficiency, streamline operations, and reduce security and compliance risks. The company is currently seeking a Principal Engineer for the Duo Agent Platform to establish technical direction across multiple teams, building an agentic orchestration layer capable of running AI agents and flows throughout the entire software lifecycle.
This role focuses on architecting reliable agent execution, model routing, event-driven triggering, the AI Catalog, and governance features. The position involves hands-on development, writing architectural narratives, defining evaluation practices, collaborating with security and product teams, and mentoring senior and staff engineers. The platform operates across GitLab.com, Dedicated, and Self-Managed installations, supporting diverse deployment models.
Candidates must possess extensive software engineering experience with large language models, distributed systems, and senior technical leadership. GitLab operates as a globally distributed organization with a high-performance culture.
Responsibilities
- Define the technical roadmap and architecture for a significant area of the Duo Agent Platform across multiple teams
- Build the orchestration layer to handle session lifecycles, tool invocation, context assembly, concurrency, retries, timeouts, and failure modes
- Participate in an incident management on-call rotation to help meet availability objectives
- Draft clear design documents, architecture narratives, and decision records for aligned engineering decisions
- Design extensibility surfaces enabling custom agents, internal systems, and external tools to integrate into workflows
- Drive down the cost and latency of agentic requests while collaborating on model selection, routing, and credit consumption
- Establish offline benchmarks and online experiments to measure task completion, correctness, latency, and cost per task
- Collaborate with Security and Compliance to build policy-driven controls, permission semantics, and audit traceability
- Mentor Staff and Senior Engineers while raising the bar for experimentation rigor and cross-team collaboration
- Participate in departmental hiring as a technical interviewer or panel member
Requirements
- 8+ years of software engineering experience
- 3+ years of experience at the Staff or Principal level, or equivalent senior technical leadership
- Hands-on production experience building on large language models including agent loops, tool calling, context management, retrieval, and evaluation
- Background in distributed systems involving service decomposition, fault tolerance, observability, and operational resilience under multi-tenant load
- Experience defining evaluation frameworks and utilizing benchmark and experiment data to drive architectural choices
- Experience designing human-in-the-loop controls, safety guardrails, and responsible AI practices
- Familiarity working in one or more of Ruby, Go, Python, or TypeScript with a willingness to work across the stack
- Excellent written and asynchronous communication skills for a globally distributed environment
