Job Description
This Principal Product Manager role sits in the Format Foundations group inside Spotify's Core Experience area. The group works alongside the business teams for books, podcasts and music to help listeners discover content, engage with it and keep a lasting relationship with it on the platform. The job is a senior leadership post where strategy carries as much weight as delivery.
The holder of this post defines the product vision for the area and shapes the portfolio of features across formats. They also shape the experience across the whole listener path with content: first finding it and judging it, then ongoing use, managing a personal collection and staying engaged over time. Much of the effort goes into getting business leaders in each format to agree on goals and turning those goals into product plans, including experiences that link listening with reading.
The best fit is a product leader with well over ten years in product management who has run major consumer media products at large technology companies. Knowledge of competitors and of how creators and publishers operate in books, podcasts or music is expected, as is hands-on experience with iOS and Android apps that have intricate interfaces. The role also involves teaming up with engineers, designers and analysts, and using AI tools regularly in day-to-day product work.
Spotify offers music, podcasts and books to listeners in many markets. Candidates would work from Stockholm or London, with some in-person meetings and flexibility to work from home.
Responsibilities
- Set the direction and vision for the formats area, spanning books, podcasts and music.
- Shape the experience across the listener journey, from discovery and judging content through engagement, collection upkeep and retention.
- Turn business objectives from leaders in books, podcasts and music into product plans.
- Drive new ideas across formats, including combined listening-and-reading experiences, and build reusable pieces that can extend to other formats.
- Own scope and coordination for several cross-functional efforts from start to finish, keeping engineering on track.
- Make choices based on data, tests and user research, and keep refining the experience.
- Align senior stakeholders in Core Experience, the business units and Personalization on one direction.
- Coach product managers and raise the standard of product work across the team.
Requirements
- More than ten years of product management work, including leading several large consumer media products at major technology firms.
- Solid understanding of the consumer media market in books, podcasts or music, including rival offerings, creator and publisher communities and listener habits.
- Track record shipping for iOS and Android, including complex interfaces.
- Skill at weighing user experience against technical limits and business results.
- Experience swaying senior executives and leaders across functions.
- Comfortable with uncertainty and using AI tools across research, analysis, iteration and prototyping.
