Job Description
Canonical is recruiting a Project Manager for Ubuntu Embedded Systems in its Devices business. The role is full-time and remote, working out of the Americas or EMEA regions, or both. The project manager coordinates and completes large, complex customer-facing projects and acts as the primary delivery contact between engineering teams and customers. The company publishes Ubuntu and has been fully distributed since it was founded in 2004.
The projects involve delivering Ubuntu images to a broad range of devices, such as robots, edge gateways, IoT devices, PCs and automotive systems. The manager needs steady working ties with clients, chip suppliers, device makers, OEMs, ODMs and IHVs, and with other Canonical departments. The role is visible and senior, and it calls for someone who can keep many stakeholders aligned.
The manager oversees each project from start to finish, making sure what Canonical and the customer aim for is delivered. Duties include helping to draft statements of work, creating project plans and schedules, getting client sign-off on schedules and work items, and keeping projects within time, resource and scope limits. The role also covers managing risk and mitigation plans, steering technical issues to the planned outcome, and keeping clients and internal stakeholders informed daily and weekly. Other tasks include coordinating custom board enablement with engineering, tracking third-party deliverables, reporting progress to management, identifying custom requests outside existing contracts, and recommending suitable Canonical technologies.
Solid experience delivering engineering services and managing software teams and field engineers is required. Experience handling project resources across cultures and continents, especially Asia, Europe and the Americas, is preferred. Applicants should hold a degree in a STEM subject if possible, have good knowledge of Linux and open source, and communicate well in English both in writing and speaking. Working non-standard hours to support an international sales and delivery group, and travelling up to four internal-event trips annually, are expected. PMP, PMI or PRINCE2 Practitioner credentials is preferred. Base pay depends on location, experience and performance.
