Job Description
Canonical is recruiting a Project Manager for Ubuntu Embedded Systems. The posting places this full-time role in an office in Taipei, Taiwan. The project manager works within the company's Devices business and coordinates large, complex projects that are delivered to customers. The company publishes Ubuntu and provides open source software and services to enterprises.
The role involves delivering Ubuntu images to a range of hardware, from robots and edge gateways to IoT units, PCs and automotive systems. The manager serves as the main delivery contact between engineering teams and customers, and works with silicon makers, OEMs, ODMs, IHVs and other internal departments. The position is highly visible and demands steady relationships with every party involved.
The manager runs each project from kickoff to close, making sure the goals of both the company and the client are achieved. Duties include helping prepare statements of work and project plans, securing client sign-off on schedules and deliverables, keeping work within agreed time, resource and scope limits, and managing risk and mitigation. Daily and weekly updates go to the client and internal stakeholders, and the manager steers technical problems towards the desired result. Other tasks include coordinating custom board enablement with engineering, tracking critical third-party items, flagging custom engineering requests that fall outside contracts, and recommending suitable technology from Canonical's portfolio. Hours may be non-standard to support projects across time zones.
Applicants need solid project management experience delivering engineering services, including leading software teams and field engineers. Experience running work across cultures and continents, ideally covering Asia, Europe and the Americas, is preferred. A degree in science, technology, engineering or maths is preferred, together with good knowledge of Linux, the open source community and computer architecture. Clear English communication is essential, and travel up to four internal-event trips annually is required. PMP, PMI or PRINCE2 Practitioner credentials is a plus. Pay depends on location, experience and performance.
