Apaleo is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join its Platform team on a remote basis. The company provides an open, API-first property management platform driven by modular, AI-powered infrastructure that enables hoteliers to manage their tech stacks and automate operations.
In this individual contributor role, you will report to the Platform Lead and handle infrastructure, security foundations, and developer experiences for the entire engineering organization. Because this is a lean team without dedicated QA or DevOps resources, you will exercise high autonomy. Rather than working from a groomed backlog, you will independently identify problems, scope initiatives, and steer projects from initial analysis through final delivery. Initial high-priority initiatives include resolving horizontal database write-scaling, modernizing the CI/CD pipeline, migrating infrastructure-as-code from CloudFormation to Terraform, and refactoring shared services for scalability.

Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable, reliable, and maintainable backend systems
- Identify, scope, and evaluate technical problems and initiatives independently
- Participate in architectural decisions and collaborate with engineering stakeholders
- Drive complex technical initiatives from analysis to completion
- Develop and maintain internal tools and infrastructure utilizing AWS and Terraform
- Manage system observability, logging, and operational excellence for high availability
- Conduct code reviews, design reviews, and pairing sessions to support technical standards
- Explore opportunities to apply AI and software automation
Requirements
- 5 or more years of backend development experience
- Demonstrated track record of owning major technical work from ambiguity to completion
- Hands-on experience managing infrastructure, reliability, or performance within a platform or infrastructure team
- Strong engineering fundamentals applicable across various languages and cloud platforms
- Experience designing and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments
- Familiarity with containerized services and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Docker and Terraform
- Proficiency in writing unit and integration tests independently
- Fluency in English
Qualifications
- Direct experience working with C# .NET, PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS or Kubernetes
- Prior experience building infrastructure-as-code from scratch and handling migrations from tools like CloudFormation
- Familiarity with event-driven and streaming systems including Kafka, Azure Service Bus, RabbitMQ, or SQS
- Background in managing observability and logging for highly available systems
- Practical use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, ChatGPT, or Amazon CodeWhisperer
- Experience mentoring other engineers and introducing new technologies to teams
