Wise is seeking a Senior Data Engineer I to join the Global KYC and Onboarding squad within its FinCrime organisation in London. This full-time, on-site role connects core engineering microservices with product analytics, focusing on the modernisation of verification data infrastructure. The successful candidate will build and maintain data pipelines, storage frameworks, and analytical models that handle customer onboarding and financial crime controls globally. The position involves working across business verification, personal verification, and the B2B Wise Platform solution to transform high-volume event data into reliable analytical assets.
This role suits an experienced engineer capable of bridging backend operations and data science teams. The squad operates through iterative delivery, requiring the new engineer to help replace legacy infrastructure while the Onboarding Platform is actively being built. Responsibilities include shaping business-accurate data models, optimising data-heavy workflows, setting pipeline testing frameworks, and collaborating with software engineers, data scientists, product analysts, and compliance stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain ETL and ELT data pipelines handling high-volume, event-driven data from verification services
- Map complex transactional events into reliable, business-accurate analytical data models for tracking onboarding funnels and conversion metrics
- Collaborate with software engineering to upgrade legacy verification infrastructure into modern, scalable data flows
- Ensure onboarding workflows and FinCrime controls are measurable, transparent, and compliant with regulatory standards
- Translate raw system inputs into clean, aggregated data models for product analysts and data scientists
- Build and standardise production pipelines using Python and Apache Airflow
- Optimize workflows and queries to reduce latency and maintain data consistency across personal, business, and platform onboarding
- Partner with analytics, engineering, and compliance teams to establish shared data contracts and monitoring practices
Requirements
- Strong software engineering skills in Python for writing maintainable code and optimising performance-intensive tasks
- Extensive experience in designing normalized and dimensional data models alongside advanced SQL query tuning for large datasets
- Proven track record of building, scheduling, and monitoring production pipelines with modern workflow orchestrators like Apache Airflow
- Experience handling high-throughput event data with a deep understanding of analytical databases, storage formats, and execution plans
- Ability to operate autonomously, taking ambiguous problems from concept to production implementation
- Strong cross-functional communication skills to collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with modern data transformation tools such as dbt
- Familiarity with distributed compute and storage platforms including Kafka, Spark, Snowflake, or Presto/Trino
- Background in product-led SaaS, fintech, or high-growth technology environments managing event tracking or onboarding funnels
