Job Description

Deepgram is hiring a Senior Data Scientist for their audio team. The company builds a voice AI platform providing real-time APIs for speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and production-grade voice agents. In this remote, full-time position, the professional will operate at the intersection of research and data, tackling complex conversational audio challenges involving speakers, accents, emotions, and acoustic variations.

The ideal candidate possesses an AI-first mindset, adapts quickly to rapid changes, and thrives in a fast-paced environment that requires constant learning and experimentation. Day-to-day responsibilities include evaluating and characterizing conversational data, designing active-learning loops, optimizing human-in-the-loop workflows, and building representative benchmarking datasets. This hands-on role reports directly to the VP of Data Operations and requires deep collaboration with engineering and research teams.

The role suits individuals who challenge conventional methods, execute rapid experiments to resolve questions, and automate their workflows using advanced AI tools. Deepgram offers a salary between USD 178,000 and 220,000 per year for this position. Candidates must be comfortable with ambiguity and ready to build reusable systems that drive model improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and characterize existing company data regarding languages, conditions, domains, speakers, and quality to identify gaps.
  • Design and construct systematic active-learning loops to drive performance gains.
  • Establish workflows, tools, and model-assisted steps to maximize human-in-the-loop efficiency.
  • Build curated datasets and methodologies for representative model benchmarking across diverse real-world speech.
  • Conduct experiments to evaluate and challenge prevailing data strategies.
  • Ensure data consistency, cleanliness, and organization while making data accessible to non-technical teams.
  • Develop repeatable, documented pipelines for model adaptation to specific domains and customers.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience working on real data pipelines and model-facing problems in data science, machine learning, or applied research.
  • Strong Python programming and data tooling abilities for analysis, scoring, and automation.
  • Familiarity with data characterization, data selection, active learning, or similar prioritization problems.
  • Working knowledge of speech, audio, or natural language processing models to evaluate output quality, confidence, and error modes.
  • Demonstrated track record of transforming messy, ambiguous data into measurable product or model enhancements.
  • Ability to build reusable systems and harnesses that operate independently.
  • Strong communication skills for translating complex technical findings to diverse audiences.
  • Active usage of AI tools with demonstrable examples of prior application.

Qualifications

  • Direct experience working with automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech, audio data, or multilingual and code-switched data.
  • Experience utilizing ensemble labeling, pseudo-labeling, or LLM-assisted annotation.
  • Familiarity with data provenance, General Data Protection Regulation-aware pipelines, or model-improvement compliance.
  • Experience developing custom or fine-tuned models for specific customers or domains.
  • Comfort collaborating directly with research and engineering teams on shared infrastructure.
