Job Description

GitLab is seeking a Senior Distribution Engineer to join its Build team. GitLab provides an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps that is utilized by millions of registered users and numerous major enterprises to accelerate digital transformation and ship secure software efficiently. In this capacity, you will handle release activities, build pipelines, and maintain system components, container images, and software packages. The position involves evaluating support requirements for emerging services and architectures, keeping GitLab components up-to-date and license-compliant, and collaborating closely with development teams to support new features. You will also manage cloud marketplace integrations, test installation and upgrade documentation, and maintain secure dependencies alongside security teams. This role suits professionals experienced in release engineering, Linux packaging, and continuous integration who enjoy bridging development teams and end users to deliver dependable installation experiences.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain packages and release artifacts for supported Linux distributions and architectures
Develop official container images and associated building tooling
Create self-service guides and infrastructure allowing development teams to integrate components into packages
Partner with security teams to address vulnerabilities and maintain updated dependencies
Manage integrations and listings with major cloud service providers
Test and maintain installation, update, and upgrade documentation and procedures prior to release
Verify license compliance for all bundled dependencies
Submit packages and components for partner validation and certification

Requirements

Experience with Linux build toolchains including autotools, make, CMake, and Nix
Production experience building container images and utilizing container build tooling
Background working with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Debian-based systems to produce .rpm and .deb packages as well as cloud-native applications
Familiarity with continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Travis CI, or GitLab continuous integration
Experience writing and maintaining complex shell scripts in production environments
Proficiency in written and spoken English for communication within a remote and asynchronous setting
Experience working with major cloud computing providers including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure

Qualifications

Additional experience with programming languages such as Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana or Prometheus
