Job Description

This role suits an experienced engineering leader with a background in distributed systems, release orchestration, and early-stage team building. Your team will develop a continuous deployment engine featuring live state reconciliation, durable workflow coordination, and artificial intelligence-native governance. You will partner closely with product management and cross-functional partners to execute the roadmap, maintain platform availability, and foster an environment where team members can thrive.

Responsibilities

Build and manage a globally distributed engineering team
Hire, onboard, and develop engineers while setting expectations for quality and accountability
Partner with product management and cross-functional teams to shape product roadmaps and architectural choices
Encourage the adoption of artificial intelligence tools in daily team workflows
Conduct regular one-on-ones, provide continuous feedback, and support career growth
Monitor milestone progress, resolve blockers early, and prevent escalation patterns
Participate in the incident management on-call rotation to maintain availability for GitLab.com

Requirements

Experience managing an engineering team, advising on architecture, and joining technical discussions
Experience with distributed systems and durable workflow execution, including state persistence and replay patterns
Experience building or managing teams focused on release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery at scale
Familiarity with Kubernetes deployment patterns and GitOps workflows
Experience with policy-based governance and event-driven architectures in enterprise-grade delivery systems
Experience building and managing teams in early-stage contexts
Experience working across functions and navigating ambiguous or fast-changing situations
Strong written and verbal communication skills for a remote-first, asynchronous workplace
