Gusto is currently seeking a Senior Product Design Manager, Banking to join their team in San Francisco on a hybrid schedule. Operating as a full-time position, this role serves as the initial design leader for the company's Banking sector, uniting a mature consumer application with a developing business platform.
Gusto provides HR, payroll, health insurance, and 401(k) solutions to help more than 500,000 small businesses operate. The design department consists of over 80 collaborative professionals who leverage artificial intelligence to speed up prototyping and user feedback cycles. In this capacity, you will operate as a player-coach, combining hands-on creation with managerial responsibilities to guide both an established consumer tool and a nascent enterprise offering.
The position suits an experienced design professional who is comfortable balancing individual contributions with team mentorship. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product management, and cross-functional partners in a regulated financial environment. Responsibilities
- Manage an initial team of three designers while actively hiring to expand the group.
- Establish unifying rituals, hiring pipelines, and planning cadences across both consumer and business banking projects.
- Coach direct reports handling products at different maturities, spanning live scaling efforts and zero-to-one definitions.
- Collaborate with product and engineering partners to co-create goals, success metrics, and milestones.
- Elevate quality standards for existing applications through design critiques while setting fresh benchmarks for new products.
- Maintain hands-on involvement by reviewing and occasionally executing high-stakes design work, particularly ahead of beta milestones.
- Partner within the engineering, product, and design trio alongside regulatory, risk, compliance, legal, and data teams.
- Coordinate with adjacent product pods, such as accounting and payments, to maintain a cohesive user experience.
- Create tailored career development plans for direct reports and adapt leadership approaches to individual needs.
- Represent the design needs of the banking division, including headcount, tooling, and quality investments, to senior leadership.
Requirements
- Ten or more years of product design experience
- Four or more years of people management experience working with senior designers or higher
- Track record in consumer or business financial products, such as fintech, banking, or financial platforms
- Experience integrating AI tools and practices into team workflows
- Ability to work from the San Francisco office on designated hybrid days approximately two to three days per week
Qualifications
- Prior experience working as a player-coach managing products at different developmental stages simultaneously
- Background partnering with risk, compliance, or legal departments on regulated financial products involving identity verification or money movement
