Canva is hiring a Senior Production Engineering Manager for a fully remote role leading Embedded, one of the two teams inside Production Engineering. That group sits in the Reliability Platform subgroup of the Infra supergroup. Production Engineering is mainly a software function that tackles operational challenges by building and changing code rather than relying on process alone.
Embedded runs focused, long-lived engineering projects alongside other teams. Current workstreams cover protecting critical data, making releases less risky, adding reliability and monitoring to a major platform overhaul, and building tools that help services cope when overloaded. The manager leads a group weighted toward experienced engineers, chooses which problems the team tackles, shapes how each project operates, and sets the measures that show impact.
Because the team collaborates across reporting lines, influence matters as much as formal authority. The manager needs to win over engineering leaders quickly, coach senior engineers who work largely unsupervised, and stay technically close enough to question assumptions. The role also includes growing future project leads and converting lessons from individual projects into standards that apply across Canva.
Responsibilities
- Lead Embedded, including defining how projects are run and what excellent technical work looks like
- Decide which production problems to take on and how each project is organised
- Coach senior engineers and foster a safe environment through direct, candid feedback
- Set measures that reveal whether Production Engineering is making the intended difference
- Turn project lessons into reusable engineering practices across teams
- Grow senior engineers into project leads who can mentor others
Requirements
- Experience leading seasoned software engineers and tech leads through complicated or unclear work
- Background in environments where uptime, scale and production risk matter
- Record of earning trust and influence where reporting lines do not provide it
- Experience directing cross-team technical initiatives from diagnosis through to results
- Track record of persuading groups to adopt new methods, even when they are busy or sceptical
- Solid computer science fundamentals and enough fluency in Go, Python, Java or C++ enough to evaluate designs and trade-offs
- Practical understanding of networking, operating system internals and public clouds such as AWS or GCP
Qualifications
- Earlier leadership of SRE or Production Engineering work, or of an adjacent function
- Exposure to large-scale storage, content delivery, networking or distributed infrastructure
- Record of developing senior engineers and tech leads who take on harder work
- Experience helping set out what a technical function is, how it operates and its remit while it forms
