Job Description
Zoox seeks a Senior Sensor Hardware Functional Safety Engineer for a hybrid position that splits its focus evenly between hardware-level Functional Safety under ISO 26262 and system-level sensor safety dealing with SOTIF and ISO 21448. The person in this role will connect rigorous hardware dependability with actual system performance, ensuring custom hardware achieves strict ASIL compliance and advanced sensor arrays containing cameras, radar, and LiDAR function safely through environmental issues and perception edge-cases. This role suits professionals who want to evaluate supplier documentation, perform board-level failure mode and effects analysis for advanced integrated circuits, and collaborate across electrical engineering, firmware, and software teams.
Zoox operates in the autonomous vehicle space, requiring safety engineering to guarantee that advanced sensor suites and custom hardware components meet industry standards. Working in a hybrid capacity, the successful candidate will partner with verification and validation teams to formulate physical test protocols and simulation strategies that comply with SOTIF guidelines for edge-case scenarios.
Responsibilities
- Review technical documents from suppliers regarding microprocessors, advanced imagers, and SoCs to check alignment with SEooC and AoU.
- Review vendor deliverables to confirm compliance with ASIL requirements for diagnostic systems as well as firmware and software maturity.
- Perform board-level FMEDA procedures for complex microcontrollers and FPGAs.
- Collaborate with electrical engineering, firmware, and software groups to establish architectural specifications that improve diagnostic monitoring.
- Assist verification and validation teams in building SOTIF-compliant physical test protocols and simulations for edge-case conditions.
Requirements
- Hold at minimum a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Robotics, or Automotive Engineering.
- Bring a minimum of three years of work experience in hardware design, silicon validation, or board bring-up.
- Demonstrate familiarity with ISO 26262 and SOTIF safety protocols.
- Exhibit strong professional communication and interpersonal skills suited for a collaborative workplace.
Qualifications
- Obtain an ISO 26262 professional certification such as CFSE or CFSP.
- Possess experience with automotive-grade hardware design and validation.
- Show background working with traceability applications like Polarion or JAMA.
- Demonstrate familiarity with IEC 61508, DO-254, and DO-178C standards during board bring-up.
