Job Description
Alpaca operates as a global financial services and brokerage infrastructure provider, delivering institutional-grade APIs for trading stocks, options, crypto, fixed income, and more to hundreds of institutions across 40 countries. The company relies on a globally distributed team spanning multiple continents to build developer-friendly trading infrastructure backed by prominent investors.
Alpaca seeks a Senior Software Engineer for Agent Experiences to design and release autonomous execution capabilities for agents operating on client accounts. This individual will establish account-level governance, safety guardrails, and compliance checks situated ahead of core trading and risk platforms. Working closely with product, compliance, risk, and identity teams, the engineer will spearhead application architecture from initial tool calls down to trading execution without direct people management responsibilities.
This opportunity suits software engineers with a strong background in backend systems who have previously shipped autonomous execution software governed by explicit policies. Candidates should possess experience developing against Model Context Protocol, connector, or plugin standards, alongside proficiency in Python or TypeScript and a willingness to code primarily in Go.
Responsibilities
- Lead application architecture for safe agent execution from tool calls through to trading systems
- Design and build account-level policy and guardrails for external agent actions
- Manage services that evaluate rules on the path into trading systems
- Collaborate with tool and skill engineering teams to define agent-initiated trading behaviors
- Adapt the execution model to keep pace with MCP protocols, connectors, plugins, and skill standards
- Partner with product, compliance, risk, and identity platform teams to establish and deploy the control model
- Ensure production reliability for policy and guardrail services
- Review technical designs across various teams and guide decisions where agent actions interact with brokerage systems
- Mentor engineers to elevate implementation and design standards
Requirements
- At least 5 years of software engineering experience creating and operating production backend systems
- Demonstrated experience shipping autonomous software that executes actions under an explicit policy without manual per-action approval
- Experience designing and implementing durable application-level account policies enforced along the action path with decision audits
- Familiarity with MCP architecture, handling stateless and stateful behavior, and building to MCP, connector, plugin, or skill standards
- Ability to collaborate with product, compliance, and risk partners to determine rules allowing unattended actions
- Proficiency in Python or TypeScript with a willingness to work primarily in Go
- Strong architectural judgment and a track record of delivering while requirements evolve
- Clear communication skills with engineering, product, compliance, and risk partners
Qualifications
- Experience with agent identity and authorization including OAuth, tokens, scopes, and delegated access
- Experience launching developer-facing tools, SDKs, or MCP servers
- Experience constructing agents using frameworks like LangChain
- Familiarity with financial markets
- Background working at a startup
- Prior remote work experience
Core Skills
Benefits
- Competitive salary and stock options
- Health benefits
- One-time new hire home-office setup stipend of 500 USD
- Monthly stipend of 150 USD provided via a Brex Card
