Job Description
Wise has an opening for a senior engineer on its Risk & Control Governance team, which operates inside the Risk Assessment Group in London. The team's mission is to build the governance, assurance and data layers that keep each risk decision at Wise consistent, explainable, auditable and monitored over time. The post sits at the junction of Risk API, Product and Financial Crime (FinCrime) groups.
The engineer will focus on four areas. First is data governance: ownership records, lineage and quality checks, so decisions rest on reliable inputs. Second is control assurance: ongoing checks that controls fire correctly, including trigger validation, drift spotting, coverage review and health scoring. Third is auditability and explainability: audit trails, change logs and tooling that makes regulatory evidence easy to produce. Fourth is building scalable, high-volume solutions that fit several risk domains.
Immediate priorities include building the assurance foundations the platform currently lacks. A control should be able to show that it used the correct trigger, had access to the right data, produced the right decision and still works as intended. Early deliverables include data quality monitoring, data contracts, lineage tracking, automated detection of false positives and negatives, and audit infrastructure. The engineer also collaborates with colleagues on the Risk API side to build governance into the platform and agree shared data contracts.
Candidates should have built data-heavy backend systems that handle large throughput, in any programming language. Hands-on use of Kafka, SQL databases and NoSQL stores is expected, along with interest in data engineering such as quality frameworks, pipeline scheduling or lineage tooling. The person should think clearly about failure modes in distributed systems, define their own work from broad goals, and coordinate with Risk API, Product and FinCrime colleagues on contracts and data models.
Responsibilities
- Set up quality monitoring, contract-based data agreements and lineage tracing
- Design automated monitoring to validate control effectiveness and catch drift and coverage gaps
- Build audit-trail systems and explainability tools that produce regulator-ready evidence
- Embed governance and assurance features within the Risk API service
- Turn broad objectives into concrete work and see delivery through
Requirements
- A record of delivering backend services that move large data volumes
- Experience with Kafka plus relational and NoSQL data stores
- Grasp of data-quality frameworks, pipeline scheduling or lineage tracing
- Ability to reason about distributed systems and their failure modes
- Comfort working with ambiguity and owning delivery
- Skill in agreeing contracts, data models and integration approaches with other teams
