Job Description
The Backend Engineer role sits on the Contacts team at Wise and is a full-time, on-site position in London. The team manages how customers add, find and manage their recipients. The whole flow is its responsibility, beginning with the platform that protects the bank accounts customers pay into, which number in the tens of millions, through search and local integrations such as Pix, to the front-end screens where people manage the parties they pay. The posting notes that the team is central to daily operations, and that an outage in its services would affect Wise as a whole.
Engineers follow agile practice and collaborate closely with a designer, a product manager and an analyst. The team operates across the Tallinn and London offices. As part of an autonomous team, the engineer contributes to backend services that drive how customers deal with their recipients, designing clean RESTful APIs, optimising queries and schemas, and using numbers to guide fixes for customer pain points.
The posting asks for engineers who get things done and have experience with large-scale distributed systems, solid Java or another object-oriented language, plus experience across relational and non-relational databases. Best coding practice, code review, open feedback and test-driven development are part of the culture. Candidates who meet some of the listed skills and are keen to learn are encouraged to apply, and Spring Boot and experience with Backend-for-Frontend services are nice to have.
