Job Description
Wise is hiring a full-time Senior Software Engineer for its API Experience team, part of Wise Platform. The role is listed in London as on-site. The team owns the public API gateway, OAuth2-based authentication and authorisation, SDKs and the developer infrastructure used by partners and internal teams. Its goal is to make financial APIs intuitive, secure and ready for enterprise use, across a network of more than 700 microservices.
The engineer designs, builds and maintains highly scalable backend services in Java and Spring Boot, using Kafka and PostgreSQL in an event-driven microservices setting. Responsibilities include defining API standards for RESTful design, OpenAPI and OAuth2, and building tooling, SDKs and sample implementations that cut integration effort for large banks. The role also involves guiding engineering practice through code reviews, taking part in domain-driven design, and mentoring junior engineers. It means collaborating with product, implementation and solutions colleagues and with partner development teams, helping other Wise engineering groups line up with shared API and architecture conventions, and travelling to engineering hubs around the world, including the Tallinn office.
The posting asks for a track record of shipping and sustaining public-facing API products in production, deep background in Java and Spring Boot, and hands-on work with event-driven systems and relational databases. Candidates should understand domain-driven design, microservices patterns and high-availability design, bring a customer-centred product mindset, and be able to explain technical ideas to non-technical audiences. Experience with financial-grade security or compliance, international payment systems, frontend frameworks or gateway tooling, and open-source SDKs or developer portals is a plus.
