Job Description
Zoox is seeking a Senior or Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join its Offline Driving Intelligence group. In this full-time hybrid position, the engineer will create and learn behavior models for traffic participants such as pedestrians, bicycles, and cars to populate simulations. These models must look realistic while remaining fully controllable to support targeted safety testing, directly influencing the speed at which Zoox validates and deploys its autonomous driving stack. The professional will collaborate closely with simulation, validation, planning, and perception teams.
This role is well-suited for an experienced practitioner in machine learning who enjoys building generative models, reinforcement learning techniques, and deep learning architectures. Candidates will utilize large datasets and computing resources to design pipelines, build generative behavior frameworks, and evaluate system performance.

Responsibilities
- Design deep learning models applying reinforcement learning and imitation learning to create human-like driving plans for agents
- Explore novel methods to measure the quality of driving plans regarding comfort, realism, safety, and progress
- Construct generative behavior models like diffusion or autoregressive architectures conditionable on specific scenario intents
- Utilize available computing resources, data repositories, and infrastructure to advance the field
- Build tools and metrics to analyze system errors and track improvements
- Partner with validation, planning, perception, and simulation engineering teams to address autonomous driving challenges
Requirements
- Experience in at least one of the following domains: prediction, planning, reinforcement learning, imitation learning, or generative modeling
- Experience training and deploying transformer-based model architectures
- Experience managing production machine learning pipelines including training frameworks, metrics pipelines, and dataset creation
- Proficiency in Python machine learning frameworks along with a basic familiarity with C++
Qualifications
- PhD degree in computer science or a related discipline paired with four or more years of relevant professional experience
- Master's degree paired with seven or more years of relevant professional experience
- Authorship of top-tier publications such as CVPR, ICML, or NeurIPS
- Familiarity with JAX
