Spotify is seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Content Platform team in New York. The organization crafts consumer experiences across mobile, desktop, smart speakers, TVs, and cars, making listening personal and intuitive for global audiences. The Content Platform manages the entire lifecycle of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and emerging formats, ensuring that catalog and user-generated media remain safe, trusted, and high quality.
In this position, the engineer will build and scale foundational machine learning systems focused on content understanding, safety, policy enforcement, and platform-level decisioning. Depending on background, focus areas may include multimodal content comprehension, platform machine learning systems, risk detection, and compliance. Responsibilities involve developing automated moderation and ranking tools, deploying systems across text, audio, image, and video modalities, and providing technical leadership to mentor engineers and guide best practices.
This role suits experienced technical leaders who excel at untangling complex, ambiguous problems and connecting data, infrastructure, and models to platform-level outcomes. Candidates must have extensive background in constructing production-grade machine learning systems at scale and familiarity with modern frameworks. The position offers remote work flexibility with occasional in-person meetings in New York.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive machine learning strategy across content understanding, safety, policy enforcement, and platform-level decisioning
- Build and scale production machine learning systems for classification, moderation, ranking, risk detection, and content evaluation
- Develop automated decisioning systems supporting content quality, integrity, safety, and policy compliance at scale
- Design and deploy machine learning systems across text, audio, image, and video content modalities
- Construct systems capable of real-time content evaluation and decision-making at Spotify scale
- Enable controlled and reliable access to content and metadata for downstream applications
- Collaborate with Product, Policy, Trust and Safety, and Engineering teams to translate content standards into technical solutions
- Advance automation while keeping high standards for quality, safety, fairness, explainability, and reliability
- Provide technical leadership by mentoring engineers and influencing machine learning engineering, evaluation, and system design best practices
Requirements
- Significant experience designing and building production-grade machine learning systems at scale
- Deep experience with modern machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
- Understanding of how to balance automation with quality, safety, reliability, and user experience
- Comfort tackling complex and ambiguous technical problems with significant product and business impact
- Experience as a technical leader who communicates clearly, mentors others, and influences across technical and non-technical teams
